class descriptions
PILATES Our Pilates Mat Classes focus on the development of core strength and balance; the fundamental building blocks of all movement. Individualized attention from the instructor helps each student engage muscles correctly, allowing a smooth progression from more elementary to advanced exercises. Mat Pilates is a great complement to all other forms of exercise as it increases strength, tone, balance, and flexibility.
YOGA BASICS A slower, more foundational flow class designed to build strength and flexibility and create access to a deeper practice. This intelligent class will teach you how to unify sequences of postures while cultivating a deep and meaningful relationship with your breath and your body.
GENTLE YOGA A harmonizing practice for people in recovery or a place to go when you need to be surrounded with love and tranquility this class will bring you to your inner Zen. Focusing on breathing, releasing and stretching, you will slowly move through postures that emphasize healing and relaxing.
VINYASA YOGA With a strong focus on proper alignment, Vinyasa (or Flow) yoga moves mindfully from one posture to the next using the breath as the link. Through this moving meditation you will journey through a creative sequence of postures that challenge the body and calm the mind. You will leave this class feeling strong, centered and rejuvenated. This well-balanced, active class encourages the use of props (blocks, straps, blankets) and is appropriate for all levels - though some yoga experience is recommended.
ANUSARA YOGA This heart-oriented Hatha yoga style focuses on attitude, alignment and action all inspired with one's breath. Individual creativity is always encouraged within the bounds of basic alignment principles. The Anusara Yoga style is designed to serve students at any level of experience or ability.
BALLET BODY This is a class designed to tone muscles and help participants sculpt the graceful lines of a dancers' body. Its focus on engaging core muscle groups will help strengthen, elongate and align the body. No prior ballet training is necessary to take this class.
INTRO TO BALLET These classes are designed for adults who wish to begin the study of classical ballet. No prior experience is necessary. Class will consist of barre exercises that focus on proper alignment as well as the steps which foster core and leg strength and flexibility. The center work will introduce elementary steps, simple jumps, as well as turns.
ADVANCED BEGINNING The advanced beginning dancer has an understanding of basic ballet steps, body positions, and port de bra. This dancer can follow basic petit and grande allegro combinations and is now ready to be introduced to more advanced ballet technique. At this level, more complicated steps are broken down into component parts and combinations are reviewed as much as necessary. This is an excellent class for the student who wants to refine their technical ability.
INTERMEDIATE BALLET These classes are for adults with previous ballet training and solid technique. The intermediate dancer can process more complicated sequences, can execute barre exercises with greater speed and accuracy and is expected to coordinate arm and leg movements smoothly. Center floor work requires a greater ability to use core strength and balance and incorporates more challenging petit and grande allegro steps and turns.
ADVANCED BALLET The advanced dancer can quickly process and memorize longer and more challenging combinations without repeated review. While all classes involve choreographic elements, center floor combinations in the advanced class involve longer choreographic sequences which allows the advanced dancer to focus energy on artistic expression and rhythmic elements.
POINTE We offer both pointe and pre-pointe classes for students who are physically and technically ready for the demands of dancing on pointe. You must take a minimum of three technique classes per week.
INTRO TO MODERN DANCE Students will be introduced to basic modern dance technique and choreography. They will practice standard movements, locomotive patterns and are introduced to creative concepts.
BEG/INT MODERN DANCE This class focuses on movement as a physical expression of emotion. This class will introduce students to a range of modern techniques; increasing strength, flexibility and freedom of movement. All exercises and choreography take place in center floor, allowing students to explore range of movement and interpretive style. No prior modern dance experience is necessary to take this class however a background in some form of dance would be helpful.
